History of the YCMN and the Le Vieux Cormoran marina Since 1958, the North Sea Yacht Club (YCMN) has established itself as one of the major players in recreational boating and nautical associations in Dunkirk. Located in the heart of the port and closely linked to the Le Vieux Cormoran marina, the club has been part of more than six decades of maritime development, sporting competitions, and welcoming boaters. Its history reflects that of a dynamic coastline and a committed community. The origins of the North Sea Yacht Club (1958–1970) A creation rooted in Dunkirk's maritime tradition. Founded in 1958, the YCMN was born from the desire of sailing and navigation enthusiasts to structure nautical activities in a rapidly modernizing port. From its inception, the club developed activities focused on cruising sailboats, coastal navigation, and welcoming crews from the coast. The first local regattas quickly boosted the club's reputation. At that time, the spirit of association, volunteering and mutual support already formed the basis of its operation, values still championed today. The club's sporting rise and emblematic figures (1970–2000) Over the years, the YCMN has consolidated its cruising sailing section, increased its outings at sea and participated in various regional competitions. The club is becoming a training ground and an essential meeting point for sailors in the North Sea. Among the prominent figures associated with the club are Bertrand Pacé, America's Cup skipper, and Elisabeth Mazo, Moth world champion. Their prestigious careers embody the nautical excellence of the region. During this period, the YCMN established itself as a local driving force for nautical disciplines: cruising, regattas, motorboating and sea fishing. The creation and development of the Le Vieux Cormoran marina A modern infrastructure to accommodate boaters The Le Vieux Cormoran marina, managed by the YCMN, is gradually establishing itself as a major hub for visiting boats. Its prime location near the Quai des Monitors allows for quick access to the city center. Modernized over time, it now offers: over 250 berths afloat , equipped pontoons (water, electricity, wifi), comfort facilities (renovated sanitary facilities, laundry), a safe environment maintained by the club. These improvements have enhanced the marina's attractiveness within the North Sea port call network and within the Pass-Ports Escales program. Dredging and marina modernization works will take place between October 2022 and March 2023: Logbook A growing openness to the city and to boaters Since the 2000s, the YCMN has expanded its activities around three main areas: 1. The development of nautical activities The club structures its sections: cruising sailboats, motorboats, fishing, cruising, group outings. Regattas are becoming more professional, driven by regular participation in coastal events. 2. Strengthening visitor reception The marina is improving its services, optimizing information for boaters and working on its integration into Dunkirk's tourist circuits. 3. Community and associative integration Publication of the Gazette, organization of friendly events, club activities, support for new members. The YCMN cultivates an open, accessible identity focused on the transmission of nautical knowledge. The role of the YCMN in Dunkirk's nautical scene The club actively contributes to the vibrancy of the coastline: coastal navigation supervision, organization of flotilla outings, cooperation with neighbouring clubs, participation in the maritime dynamics of Dunkirk. The Le Vieux Cormoran marina, for its part, constitutes a strategic point for boaters sailing between the ports of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. - Académie moteur et voile du YCMN – Dunkerque
Cette académie propose un véritable parcours initiatique pour chacune des deux filières complémentaires du YCMN : la voile de croisière et la pêche récréative en mer. The YCMN "Motor and Sail" Academy: transmitting knowledge, training, and sailing together Present on the Dunkirk coast since 1958, the North Sea Yacht Club (YCMN) has become a major player in local and national maritime life. This ideal location allows its members to observe the evolution of recreational boating. Among the observations made, two particularly caught the attention of the YCMN officials: the aging of boat owners and the growing need for training, both for the youngest members of the club and for novices wishing to be able to go to sea autonomously and safely. Transmitting knowledge This situation prompted the North Sea Yacht Club to create the YCMN "motor and sailing" Academy, a structuring and unifying project. This academy offers a true initiatory journey for each of the two complementary YCMN sectors: cruising sailing and recreational sea fishing. Each course is organized by progressive skill levels and is based on an individual progress booklet allowing validation of acquired skills, up to complete autonomy. The workshops offered will be led by the club's most experienced skippers. For the implementation of these training courses, the Academy has just acquired two dedicated boats: a habitable sailboat of less than 10 meters and a fully equipped fishing-pleasure boat. These units, veritable educational platforms, will be used for initial and advanced training, but also for club outings or solidarity and event-based actions carried out by the YCMN. During the summer period, the two ships will also be available for charter by Academy members who meet the necessary prerequisites. Renewing the generations of boaters A new and major project that reinforces the momentum of the North Sea Yacht Club, resolutely focused on sharing, transmitting and promoting maritime knowledge. It is also an opportunity to renew the generations of boaters, attract new members and strengthen the intergenerational link that makes the club so rich. By structuring the transmission of knowledge and promoting accessible, responsible and safe practice, the YCMN affirms more than ever its role as a transmitter of maritime culture, faithful to the spirit of Jean Bart and open to the future.
